How do you take a highly successful, international law firm turning over $150m+ and make it better, with out compromising the rich rewards enjoyed by the partners, both at the time and for future generations?.

As a consultant, this was one of the most challenging assignments of Richard’s career.

I remember the sales pitch so vividly. I felt completely out of my depth, standing in front of a panel of highly intellectual & very serious lawyers. I was good on transformation, good on financial services, but law? Why on earth would they choose me and my team to take this on? Looking back, I reflect this was my first exposure to the first step in coaching – the chemistry session. The reason they chose our team was due to the “chemistry” between me and their Chairman, a formidable character by any judgement.

This so-called “chemistry” moment, is a crucial part of the process. Two people who ultimately form a deep thinking partnership to make lasting, effective change, need to be confident that they are right for each other. When that test is passed, great things are possible.

Looking back, the 9 month project that followed was part consulting & part coaching. The consulting bit entailed a new organisation design and financial model. No small task but perhaps less daunting than the coaching aspect. To do this, Richard needed to guide the 30 Partners, located all over the world, to a unanimous conclusion. It was quite literally all or nothing. This required individual consultation and collective progression towards a goal. Whether you call it coaching or coaxing, it certainly didn’t feel like consulting!

This was a wonderful opportunity to learn and develop new skills with a challenging audience. The project won a prestigious award for the quality of its outcome and the nature of the journey it took to get there.
